SMS Hour of CODE
Saco Middle School recently participated in "The Hour of Code", a series of activities and tutorials offered through code.org in conjunction with Computer Science Education Week. The experience offered students the "opportunity to engage in an hour-long experience with code." Before leaving for vacation, every 6th grade student will try out coding for themselves. Upon return from winter break, 6th grade students who would like to further work with computer science can stay after school for Coding Club. Students will work to create an app.

SMS Spirit Week!
The SMS Student Council held a Spirit Week during November and raised over $1000. The council voted on how to spend some of the money to instantly make a difference in the school and the community. They decided to request some upgrades in the school facilities and buy another microwave for the cafeteria. The students then did research and comparative shopping. Discussions were had regarding buying local and the advantages and disadvantages involved. Ultimately the students decided to buy the microwave from Vic's Appliances in Saco. The picture below shows students setting up the microwave in the cafeteria.
